Exploring key issues associated with using solid-state DC breakers in closed multibus or ring systems, including fault current complexity and coordination challenges inherent in DC systems. A concern is achieving selectivity, as fault currents in ring systems can flow from multiple directions, resulting in increased fault levels and the potential for over-tripping or under-tripping of protection devices. The complexity of protection schemes, including the need for communication-based solutions, further complicates the deployment of DC circuit breakers. The ability of SSDCBs to interrupt DC currents in microseconds significantly simplifies fault ride-through, as swift fault clearance minimizes its negative impact.
