Sustainable propulsion solutions with ESS application
)
HD Hyundai (HD KSOE) will present its eco-friendly propulsion solutions at the expo, including its energy storage system technology.
Lithium-ion batteries are among the most promising eco-friendly technologies for achieving zero GHG emissions without an internal combustion engine. However, ESS application in marine vessels requires careful consideration. Due to limited onboard space and demanding operational profiles, marine batteries must offer higher energy density and, in some cases, sufficient power to replace conventional generators.
Furthermore, given the risk of thermal runaway, robust safety design is essential, not only for battery protection but also for overall system stability. Therefore, battery management systems and energy management systems must effectively monitor and prevent faults such as overcharging or short circuits, supported by accurate state of charge and state of health estimation. Additionally, proper thermal management – including an efficient cooling system – is crucial.
Safe module and rack design are essential, and thermal barriers and fire suppression systems are usually selected to prevent thermal runaway propagation.
