Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology caught up with Sealence CEO Davide Lusignani at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 to find out more about the company's new solid-state battery technology that is transforming marine applications. Lusignani explained that the lightweight, high energy density battery is receiving positive feedback from customers for its ability to enhance power and energy on boats.
Sealence also offers an integrated powertrain system, including generator range extenders and propulsion.
The focus is on an electric propulsion unit used in small ferries and submarines and the quiet Panda 5000i Neo generator at the Fischer Panda stand at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024. The company is also showing a 5kW solution for small sailing and charter boats.
As Marcel Schwarzenberg-Unruh, sales manager at Fischer Panda, explained to Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology, the growing market for these systems is influenced by legislation and environmental concerns. He also highlighted the collaboration between Fischer Panda and system integrators in building entire systems, along with potential refits or system changes based on project needs.
Andrew Ennever, head of fuel cell development at Ricardo, is on the company's stand at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 to unveil a new fuel cell system. The system, which boasts high power density and containerization plans, is Ricardo's solution to the zero emissions challenge.
Ennever also talked to Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology about the company's engineering prowess and ability to integrate multiple stacks, the growing interest in hydrogen fuel cells and the uncertainty surrounding future fuel options.

Massimo Labruna, CEO at AS Labruna, took a few minutes out of Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 to talk to Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology about the company's use of methanol as a fuel source for its fuel cell.
Labruna explained that methanol's easy storage, transportation and refueling make it a preferred choice. The fuel cell powers a vessel's propulsion and onboard services, offering zero emissions and noise, and can be integrated into existing systems or used as a range extender. The systems can be refitted to old boats or in new-builds.
Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International was keen to find out more about BlueNav's retractable electric motors from the company's Floriane Grussenmeyer and Cédric Perra, who are on the company's stand at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 in Amsterdam. They explained how operators can use combustion engines for speed, and BlueNav's add-on BlueSpin electric motor for harbor maneuverability and environmental benefits. The system can be equipped on various vessels and switching between modes is designed to be easy.
Kenneth Husebo, sales manager at Blueday Technology, talked to Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology on the company's stand at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 about its power supply systems which offer fast charging solutions and include a system that is capable of charging multiple vessels at once. Blueday also offers flexible and standardized charging solutions for various vessel fleets.
Battery manufacturer Calb is aiming to revolutionize the European maritime industry by aiding battery ship owners with electrification. As Shaun Tan explains in this video, the company offers a range of solutions for different vessels, such as container ships and ferries. Its swappable battery containers and liquid cooling containers are designed to significantly cut down charging time, offering both convenience and efficiency.

The DNV-approved pack for 400V and 800V applications can be connected in series and parallel and is used in commercial vessels and public transportation, aligning with the rising demand for eco-friendly solutions. Future plans involve creating modular battery packs and reducing costs, providing flexibility and compatibility with various applications.
Orlando-based Evoa has been working on an electropropulsion system since 2018. As founder Michael Anderson explained to Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International in this video interview at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe, in collaboration with WAE Evoa has launched a 34kWh battery pack with features including cooling and auto shut-off. The pack is versatile, suitable for various types of boat and can be stacked for extra power.
Evoa has also introduced a customizable low-profile outboard motor that can be paired with the new battery.

Power4Future, part of Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, is venturing into the maritime batteries sector. Andrea Colavitto, Power4Future's head of research and innovation, told Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International that the company's battery system, which features a flexible design and LFP chemistry, is adaptable for various vessels. In the interview at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe in Amsterdam, he went on to explain that the company designs all safety features in-house for total control and that the battery system is agnostic, making it suitable for diverse applications.
